After The End

By Dennis Kelly

Mark and Louise were in the bar when the nuclear attack happened. When Louisewakes up she is told by Mark that they are in the bomb shelter hiding from the nuclear attack and that her life was saved by Mark, who was prescient enough to furnish a supply of water, canned food, table games and a knife. The only thing Louise and Mark are prompted to do is wait – wait until the mayhem is over and their lives are not under danger.

Can they survive the attack?
Can they abide each other?

The play has an epigraph by Sarah Kane that states: “We have to descend to hell imaginatively to avoid going there in reality.” The play tries to epitomize this concept by vividly portraying the rage and aggression that is inherent part of human nature, scrutinizingthe concepts of miscommunication and the hurdle of expressing emotions in the era of rapid technological advancement.
